THE ALIFE RIVINGTON CLUB PARTNERS UP WITH UMBRO TO CREATE A "WORLD CHAMPIONS" POP-UP SHOP AND OUTDOOR VIEWING SPACE FOR THE DURATION OF THIS SUMMER'S WORLD SOCCER TOURNAMENT.

Joining the World Cup fever that's taking over NYC, A.R.C. and UMBRO—the Manchester, UK-based Football heritage brand and supplier of England's official team uniform—have partnered to create the WORLD CHAMPIONS Umbro x A.R.C. pop-up shop and outdoor viewing space.

The Umbro A.R.C. pop-up shop will showcase the Umbro World Champions collection. The Umbro World Champions collection celebrates the seven countries that have lifted the heralded trophy since the championship first took place in Uruguay in 1930: Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy and Uruguay. Designed in association with artists from each respective winning country–Ben Eine from England and André from France to name a couple–the collection include jerseys and T-shirts that feature each country's team crest reinterpreted by the artists. (See pictures below).

Each jersey will be available on its own or as a part of a limited box set that includes a signed print by the artist and a book outlining the entire collection: Artist bios, detailed views of each design and the wives and girlfriends of players (WAGS) modeling the jerseys.

Accompanying the pop-up shop, A.R.C. and UMBRO have also created an outdoor viewing space in A.R.C.'s Courtyard. The Umbro A.R.C. The Umbro A.R.C. pop-up shop is located at 157 Rivington Street and the Umbro A.R.C. World Champions Space is located in the Alife Rivington Club courtyard, at 158 Rivington Street, in New York City's Lower East Side.

The balloon and camera were launched at 7:44 AM, the balloon burst at 10:51 AM at 107,145 ft. and the camera landed via parachute at 11:40 AM, 89 miles from the launch site after a 3 hr. & 56 min. flight. The camera recorded a total of 4 hrs. & 22 min. of Hi-Def Video before it stopped recording 53 secs after landing, when its 32GB of memory was full. The only thing better would have been if the camera had recorded for several minutes more to captured the sound of us approaching and video of us opening its container. full article bear4.com

called the Foreign Tongues with I-Am and Half Black.
We also have a sort of music company called Mighty Awesome

When did you start making music?:UUUM 2006. my senior year in High School

What was your biggest influence before you started?: Well my friend Beat Pro(fessor) gave me a version of fruity loops and he said you can make beats with it. He had already started doing it. So I was like word? It interested me because it was a chance for me to make my own music. Before that I wrote raps and stuff but at that time I started paying more attention to the beats in songs and music more than words. This was well before I met Donuts By the way. haha.

What are your goals/where do you want to take your music?: My main goal right now is to push Foreign Tongues. Make sure people know us and listen to us and support us. Support is big. Also, I've been having the hugest itch to take my music outside of hip hop and work on alternative music. That type of music influences me more than hip hop does.

What are you working on at the moment?:We're working on
I-Am album: Death, Burial, and Ressurection. Half Black, Me, and Donuts are producing it. Half has like basically the whole album haha. I always tell him, that he's bout to be Kanye on this shit while we're Dilla.(Common's BE) We're also working with
Youngs for his upcoming mixtape, and a project with The Red Fox. Its completely based on Harry Potter hence, where Donuts and I got our band name. And still looking for someone to work with for music outside of hip hop(but not r&b)

Any live dates coming up?: Soon. We(Foreign Tongues) are trying to find time to set up shows.

Sean Ellis was a child when he first became interested in animals. His interest in foxes that lived near the farm where he grew up eventually led to his interest in wolves. Wolves have been, and continue to be, his life's work. Ellis decided that scientists were not learning much new information about wolves using their normal methods, and he knew that Native Americans knew much more about wolves than scientists, so he decided that living alongside the wolves was the best way to come to understand their world. He knows most people think he must be crazy to live with wolves, many scientists question his unorthodox methods. But he says his one-of-a-kind perspective will help the world grasp the complex nature of wolf society. Ellis spent seven years studying wolves on the Nez Perce Indian reservation in Idaho.It was there that he first gained access to a pack. Later, he spent 18 months living in captivity with a three wolf pups that had been abandoned by their mother at birth. Ellis has mastered the language of wolves. He communicates with them through posture, facial expression, and sound.

Since Ellis aims to be the "dominant wolf" in the captive groups with which he has lived, so he can teach the wolves how to survive in the wild. He must behave as the dominant wolf ("alpha" wolf) would behave. With wolves, the dominant one often eats the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys of freshly killed carcasses. Since eating the raw meat would harm Ellis, his colleagues flash-cook the parts he will eat and place them in a bag inside the carcass. When the carcass is brought in, Ellis defends what is his. The fact that Ellis has gained acceptance among wolves is even more unusual because wolves usually become jittery around strangers. Ellis warns against trying what he does, "It's very dangerous for people who haven't been trained, who think that they can just walk into a wolf pack and be accepted,". When Ellis is with the wolves, he tries to put aside all emotions (for example, fear, guilt, and remorse).He tries to do that because wolves do not feel emotions like humans. When Ellis returns to human society, some people have said it is difficult to communicate with him for the first few weeks, "But I seem to be able to move more easily between the two worlds now,". Describe your music in 5 words: Steige: A-hippa-to-the-hoppa.Mike: With a touch of awesome.

When did you start making music?: Together, about 4 years ago. 2004. Separately, we've both been making music another 4 or 5 years on top of that.

Why?: Steige: The women! Whenever I was younger I always figured that if I spent enough time in my basement learning how to write and rap and play instruments, then one day I might impress some nice young lady, and she might let me give her a kiss, and then we might get married, and then we'd live happily ever after! I always figured that seemed easier than learning to socialize.
Mike: I always wrote poetry as a kid and have had a passion for hip hop since as far back as I can remember. I cant remember yesterday so thats not saying much but you get the point. I wanted to put my lyrics over a style of beats that I like so I learned to produce and havent looked back ever since. Trying to live off this shit now.

So what are you currently doing?: Steige: We're currently recording tracks for our upcoming album, 'Understanding More About Nothing Than Anybody Ever Thought Impossible, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Music.' We figure that regardless how bad it comes out we can at least try to milk some publicity out of the preposterously long name.

Any shows coming up?: We just got back from a 13 city tour with the ultra amazing 'Jiminy', across western Canada! And tomorrow we're heading out for 4 shows in the next 4 days in: Vancouver, 2 nights in Washington, and then back up to Whistler. Then at the end of the month we're going out to New York for a party! That should be fun.

Describe your music in 5 words: The Red Fox Murderin' Mics

When did you start making music?: A long, long time ago...

Why?: I have a lot of trouble sitting still and being quiet. When I was younger I would get into a lot of trouble for breaking things, lighting shit on fire, messing with girls, making noise, and basically being a hyperactive freak that liked to communicate in a made up language and funny voices. Not much has changed now that I think about it... But when I hit my teenage years I started getting arrested and kicked out of school and shit. My best friends at this time had no one to sing in their Grindcore band so I figured why not? Screaming in a mic and getting trashed would at least keep me out of trouble. From there I just became dependent on the release of lyric writing and the mental freedom of focusing and manipulating your voice. Honestly at this point it's Rap Or Die for me...

So what are you currently doing?: Me and GRANDPA-J ® just wrapped on Seven Sins which will be available this November. I'm also gearing up to release an instrumental album called Spent Balloons and my second solo album Prescription Worthy. And I'm in the beginning stages of a rap concept album based on Harry Potter produced by Tom Riddle and another instrumental album using only Elliot Smith samples. So not much.

Any shows coming up?: I'm playing an Obama Benefit show on October 19th at Blake's On Telegraph in Berkeley. Check my myspace for details. Also trying to put together a tour for 2009.

Tell us something we didnt already know about you?: I work in a Veterinarian Hospital and before that I worked in the daycare system. I don't believe in doing anything for money that you don't feel is important to the world at large.

Describe your music in 5 words: Sheesh, Yikes, Goose Fraba, Huh?

When did you start making music?: Well...I began writing music around the age of 10. It all started when I stumbled across a program which enabled myself to compose in MIDI format (www.tabit.net). I started making hip hop about 2 years ago.

Why?: I guess I needed an outlet for some things left unsaid. I felt as if I expressed all of that shi through my music.

So what are you currently doing?: Project wise I'm currently working on my full length for release in Japan under Rockwell Product Shop. I intend to release the same album in the US under World Around Records as well.

"Tree man"

An Indonesian fisherman who feared that he would be killed by warty roots that covered his body has been given hope of recovery by an American doctor.

Dede, known in his local village as "The Tree Man", caused confusion among medical experts when strange growths appeared on his body after he cut his knee in an accident as a teenager.

The tree-like mutations began to spread across his body, practically incapacitating him.

Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, he was forced to raise his two children in poverty, and had been given no assurance that his condition could be cured.

To earn money Dede joined a "freak show" and showcased his rare condition to a paying audience.

But now with the help of an American doctor, Dede's condition could be drastically improved.

After testing Dede's blood and samples of the lesions, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland came to the conclusion that Dede's condition is caused by the fairly common Human Papilloma Virus.

Dr Gaspari believes that a medium length course of Vitamin A should help reduce the growth of the warts.
"He won't have a perfectly normal body but the warts should reduce in size to the point where he could use his hands," Dr Gaspari said.

"Over the course of three to six months the warts should be come smaller and fewer in number. He will be living a more normal life."

Dr Gaspari hopes to get the necessary drugs free of charge from pharmaceutical firms. They would then be administered by Indonesian doctors under his supervision.

When did you start making music?: 2 years ago

Why?: I first started writing when I met two guys by the names of Shawdow 2 and SupernovaSlick. We all worked at the same place and Slick played me some of his songs….. They told me to write some shit, I wrote it and it came out in poetry form called “battle’n with satan”. Shadow 2 said I was the best poet he had ever heard and I said fuck it and kept on writing. Now people are sending me beats all over the world… and I love doing music….

So what are you currently doing?: right now I’m working on my first album called “WIZ-DUMB”. I have 3 more tracks to make for it and I’m gonna rap it up…. After that i’m gonna finish up all of my internet collabs with dope mc’s like WEEZ1 , and d. strange among others. Then it’s right to work on my project for Sassbologna Records which is a tape with GWIZ I’m pumped about that yo….. Also I’m not for sure but 4-LOM and I are brainstorming on a joint together called “IZ-LOM”. I did one track for it already with the F.U.M.E.S and it’s crazy. Other projects in the works are collabs with Chris Williams, and JD Ultraslick, and AREA FLITHY ONEZ, that will lead up to my next solo joint call NAWWW-LEGDE

Anything else you we should know?: I’m not a rapper even though I kinda sound like it. I just do my own thing. I’m a spoken word poet that loves hip-hop but loves to make poems… I don’t write to many love poems but when I do I use the name “ALLAH JONES”….. Japanese Bug Fights

Japanese kids somehow manage to offload the shittiest bits of their pop culture on to us while keeping the best stuff for themselves. While we're stuck playing Pokémon cards, they've only gone and invented the best game in playground history. It's called bug fights and it's such a huge craze that certain beetle species are becoming endangered because of it. Kyle Benzle has taken the radness of bug fights and poured awesome all over it. His website, Japanese Bug Fights, pits powerful, exotic insects against each other in a terrarium. Turns out watching a praying mantis trying to kill a giant hornet is one of the most compelling things you will ever see. We asked Kyle to tell us a bit more about insect cage-rage...

What made you start the website?
Beetle fighting is incredibly popular with kids in Japan right now. I didn't know of anyone else doing other insects so it just seemed like the next thing to do. We wanted to try something new.

Who is your favourite?
The hornet is by far my favourite fighter. Always has been.

Who is the champ?
The locust is the ultimate champion. No one can beat the locust. He is the only one to never lose.

Are you saying a swarm of locusts is more deadly than an army of scorpions?
One locust would be more powerful than an army of scorpions. The locust, even though it is my least favorite, is the true champion for a very good reason. From the beginning of the agricultural revolution through to the Judeo-Christian Biblical stories, the locust struck the fear of God into all who listened. The locust is feared and hated. The locust is a deadly and unmerciful killer. The locust has no remorse and only one desire: the desire for destruction and to continue the endless march of entropy into the future.

That sounds cool.
I love it. It's just very interesting to see these insects up so close and to be doing what they do best; doing what they have evolved to do over millions of years

"Champion Sound" 5th birthday

back in 2003, J Dilla was better known as Jay Dee, the Detroit producer widely respected in hip-hop, but lesser known in his solo career; Madlib was an up-and-coming L.A. producer making a name for himself with his wild diversity, from rap to electronic jazz to remixes projects. Few knew who or what "Jaylib" was, and many of those who did felt that Champion Sound wasn't given the attention is deserved when it was originally released.

At the time of Champion Sound's original release in late 2003, J Dilla and Madlib had never been photographed together or appeared as a group in public. In the years that followed, this changed drastically - after Dilla's move to Los Angeles, the two worked together, communicated through hip-hop beat tapes, and toured together as Jaylib. Madlib's profile rose with his MF DOOM-collab Madvillain. J Dilla, though dealing with a serious illness, continued crafting material for artists such as Common and Busta Rhymes while working on a wealth of solo material. Dilla's final albums - Donuts and The Shining - along with the re-issue of Ruff Draft have introduced his name and music to countless new fans while publications from The Source to Rolling Stone paid respect to his career.

The Graffers Strike Back!!!!

When artist Robin Rhode was asked to create a 400-square-foot mural on the graffiti-scrawled walls of a skateboarding park on the South Bank, he decorated the area with a mass of geometric silver and black patterns.

It took the South African and 10 assistants two days to transform the spot beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall, to coincide with the opening of his new exhibition at the Hayward Gallery.

But 24 hours later the work was ruined - daubed over with a new set of slogans and tags. A spokeswoman for the Southbank Centre, which commissioned the project, said it was disappointing Mr Rhode's work had disappeared, but added that he had warned them it would not last long.

"People have always used this space creatively and Robin said that if he was painting over their work it was only right that they would paint back over his," said the spokeswoman.

Mr Rhode said a lot of his paintings, installations and performances were of a transient nature and he liked to use materials such as soap, charcoal and chalk.

"My project was one which exists one day and then disappears another," he said. "It is quite obvious that graffiti artists will bomb my wall drawing.

What people need to understand is that the space in question was a negative space. The skaters and graff artists took a space that had been written off by the surrounding building plan, meaning that the council never intended to use that space at all. The skaters created a positive, active space and now "they" want to use it, this would never have been possible if it wasn't for the skaters and graffers, who the council seem to be intent on pushing away from the southbank.

After playing host to a plethora of low-slung-trousered skater boys over the last 30 years, the Southbank Skate Park is now looking set to close.

Located underneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Thames in London, the UK’s busiest skate park has been threatened with closure for the last few years, but this time the grumps at the council mean business.

Part of the South Bank Centre known as the under-croft, has been used by the skateboard community since the early 70s. It was originally an architectual dead-spot which has become the home of British skateboarding. The size of the under-croft has been reduced in recent years and was supposed to be returned to original size. This now seems unlikely and the future of the whole space is completely unsure at present. One part of the South Bank Centre has already been turned into shops looking out over the river and rumour has it the rest is sure to follow.

In the same week the London mayor announced he’d like to make skateboarding an Olympic sport, it seems one of the capital’s best skate spots will no longer be welcoming riders from all over the UK to ride its famous banks.

However, the four-wheeled fans are fighting back by launching a petition and inviting skateboarders to sign up to preserve the Southbank Skate Park.

Join forces with the British skateboarding community to save the park by signing the petition.
